Tips for Organizing Your Pocket Book

*   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *

keeping your finances organized and in check can be a serious challenge, especially when nordstrom's semi-annual sale is calling your name and that trendy new restaurant down the street just opened. but as a frugal college student or recent grad living on a limited income, it is important to remember the reality of life's expenses. the best way to make sure you don't end up in the hole is to know how much you are spending, what you are spending your money on and how much you are making. from there, you can create a budget making sure you don't miss out on dinner with friends at that new restaurant and ensuring you can splurge on a new top every once and a while (especially when nordstrom's semi-annual sale is on :)

check out my template to make tracking your expenses easy.

even better, have the internet do it for you. mint is a great free and secure program that syncs your credit card and bank accounts.

to get you started, here is a list of things you should be tracking:

  • Necessary Expenses
    • things like rent, electric/cable bills and groceries
  • Personal Expenses
    • things like shopping and eating out
  • Income
    • track what money you are bringing in and where it is coming from
i also like to keep and want | need list. this helps me keep my purchases in perspective and prevents me from blowing my money on something i don't really need.

**please note i am no sort of financial expert, i just wanted to past on some of my observations from personal experience. hope it helps!**

Words to Live By

-"smile like you've never cried, fight like you've never lost, love like you've never been hurt, and live like there's no tomorrow."

-"don't play hard to get, play hard to forget."

-"if love doesn't make you feel a little crazy every now and then, it's not love."

-"let's sleep under the stars."

-"i get by with a little help from my friends."

-"laugh as much as you breathe and love as long as you live."

-"all good things are wild and free."

-"music is what feelings sound like."

-"you fit me better than my favorite sweater."

-"it's better to burn out than fade away."

-"when the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace."

Do It Yourself: Levi Cut-Offs

after my struggle to find a decent pair of high waisted denim shorts, i decided to take matters into my own hands and make my own.

the results were surprisingly good! take a look at how its done.

i bought a great pair of old levis from my local thrift shop. they were $5.99. please.

to destroy your jeans you will need:

  • your best pair of scissors
  • a sharpie
  • a retractable blade
  • sand paper

start by putting your jeans on and measuring the length you would like your shorts to be. *tip: always go longer, you can cut them more later if need be, you can never go back once they are cut. i made a mark with the sharpie. cut one leg first (in as straight of a line as you can.) next, simply fold the leg over and follow the line for the other leg.

once your jeans are cut it is time to destroy them! make a few cuts where you want holes or fraying. then, use the sand paper to rough up the edges.

wash the shorts for the final touch, and there you go. who needs urban anyway!

What I'm Wearing: Outside Lands 2013

with the highly-coveted san fran music festival less than a month away, it's time to start pulling your hippie skirts and head wraps out from the back of your closet: festival-wear is not something to be taken lightly.

as a so-cal girl venturing farther up the coast, i am preparing to layer, layer, layer. i mean, it can get to be below 70 degrees fahrenheit during the month of august? what kind of place is this? the "cold" weather aside, all my outfit planning and shopping has inspired me to share some of my favorite sources inspiration. hopefully it will help you too.

and with that i am ready for a weekend of good music, good friends and fantastic fashion!

still haven't bought your ticket? get on it here.

wondering where to shop? here are some of my favorites...

My Current Obsession: Endless Summer

in honor of the official start of SUMMER 2013...

with do much hype surrounding the movie and this poster hanging everywhere i turned, i was excited to finally get the opportunity to watch endless summer. unexpectedly comical and a great look into the history of surfing around the world, endless summer is both inspiring and informative. if nothing else it made me want to pack up my bags and leave the constraints of structured society behind! now all that is left for met to do is dig up my old surfboard and make it out to the beach. soon.
